I feel guilty wanting a different life than my family expects

My family has always imagined that I would live close to home, follow a practical career path, and help out often. I love them, but I want to move away and build a life that feels more like mine. I feel selfish even typing that. Has anyone balanced family expectations with wanting independence?

I get that your responsibilities to your family are important, but your family does everything they do so you can live your life the way you want to. Don't limit yourself to your parents expectations, at the end of the day its your life to live.

Talk to your family, sure it may be tough to adjust at first, but that's something they will have to figure out. Don't feel selfish because you want to live your life the way you want, that's your right, and your family should support you.
